The biggest fashion awards in Bulgaria supported the European citizens’ initiative “Fur Free Europe”

People from the fashion world in Bulgaria joined the call of over one million citizens of the European Union, who want a ban on all fur farms and the sale of products from these farms throughout the EU.

Sofia, Bulgaria, January 26, 2023 – The European Citizens Initiative “‘Fur Free Europe” was supported by one of the biggest fashion events in Bulgaria. Code Fashion Awards once again brought together the fashion public and the most famous names in the fashion industry in Bulgaria. This year, the organizers chose the cause of the event to be the end of the senseless cruelty to animals used for fur and called for support for the European citizens’ initiative (ECI) “‘Fur Free Europe”.

In her opening speech, Ms. Maria Boneva, organizer of the event, said:
“This year our cause of the event will not be donating money. This year our cause will change the way you think. Of course, at the first moment it may sound hypocritical to you, because which woman among our mothers and grandmothers does not have coats made of fur … When great people from the organisation CAAI (Campaign and Activism for the Animals in the Industry) came. they were in our Code Health TV. They showed us what does it cost [to make fur from the animals]. Me, personaly, and our TV staff were very touched. In fact, it is not necessary to have a coat of silver fox or mink to be happy, loved and a rich woman. You can pass this message on to your children. Because today you are Maria, Peter, George, Angel, but tomorrow you don’t know, you may be a silver fox or simply a creature that does not need to suffer for us to be satisfied.”

Already during the opening of the awards, the guests had the opportunity to see a video of the Bulgarian NGO ‘CAAI’ which calls on Bulgarian citizens to sign the European citizens’ initiative to ban all fur farms in the EU and the sale of products from them. The video features famous Bulgarian celebrities. Thanks to the public support, the initiative has so far collected over 1.4 million signatures from EU citizens. The ECI is supported by many other popular people in Bulgaria and many european countries.

“This event in its essence is both an evolution and a revolution for the fashion world in Bulgaria. Evolution, because not only in Bulgaria, but also in Europe and other parts of the world, people, once they are already familiar, cannot accept the unnecessary cruelty of killing 60 minks or 40 foxes for one coat. It is revolutionary, because until now the fur free trend was not yet shared at fashion events in our country. Internationally, more and more European capitals with fashion weeks such as London, Oslo, Amsterdam, Helsinki and Copenhagen are stopping the use of fur in their shows. We thank the organizers of the Code Fashion Awards for helping the European citizen initiative to reach the fashion circles in Bulgaria,” shared Vladimir Nguyen from “CAAI”.
