Thinning [thinning\/reducing] is not recommended and, if practiced, should be limited to one thinning per flock.  <\/li><li>Use breeds that demonstrate better welfare indicators [e.g. develop fewer complications due to selection]. Either the following breeds: Hubbard JA757, 787, 957 or 987, Rambler Ranger, Ranger Classic, and Ranger Gold; or other breeds that meet the criteria of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspca.org.uk\/documents\/1494935\/9042554\/RSPCA+Broiler+Welfare+Assessment+Protocol+May17.pdf\/a8dfa8ff-69ed-e1ab-c908-b1523e4ec642?t=1553171031284&amp;download=true\">RSPCA Broiler Breed Welfare Assessment Protocol<\/a>. <\/li><li>Achieving improved growing environment conditions including:<ul><li>At least 50 lux of light, including natural light.<\/li><li>At least two metres of usable perching area, and two substrates for pecking and burrowing, for every 1000 birds.<\/li><li>For air quality, the maximum requirements of Annex 2.3 of the EU Broiler Directive, regardless of stocking density.<\/li><li>No use of cages or multi-storey rearing systems.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Introduction of stunning in a controlled atmosphere with inert gases, or multiphasic gas stunning, or effective electric stunning without turning conscious birds upside down.<\/li><li>Demonstration of achieved compliance through third party audit and annual public reporting on progress against the criteria of this commitment.<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/welfarecommitments.com\/letters\/europe\/\"><em><strong>The original <\/strong>English <strong>text of the declaration <\/strong>can be found here.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Related page: Petition Subway for more humane conditions for broiler chickens The Commitment European Chicken Commitment concerns the welfare of chickens raised and killed for meat (broilers).
